SHLOHMO
Since the launch of his collective/label WEDIDIT in 2008 - including producers RL Grime, Salva, and Groundislava, to name a few – LA based producer Shlohmo (aka Henry Laufer) has collaborated with the likes of notable artists Jeremih, Tory Lanez, and BANKS, amassing millions of SoundCloud plays in the process thanks to his maverick take on electronic music. The “Cruel Intentions” collaborative EP from WEDIDIIT and Tory Lanez was a major success and proved the group is stretching the bounds of electronic music.
Around this time last year, Shlohmo made headlines for his vocal opinion on the corrupting influence of social media on artists. FACT excerpted the interview and published a few quotes under the headline “Shlohmo bashes the entire music industry.” But upon reading the interview in its entirety, one walked away believing that Shlohmo’s primary target wasn’t the music industry as much as social media and the constant, boorish self-promotion it often brings out of artists.
Months later, after completing an extensive tour, Shlohmo went absent from social media. Amid a series of deaths and major illnesses within his inner circle and a protracted legal battle with Def Jam which saw his highly anticipated collaboration with experimental-leaning R&B crooner Jeremih shelved, Shlohmo retreated to his newly built home studio to focus on his third solo album Dark Red, a symphonic layered, densely textured album that draws influence from hip-hop, IDM and stoner rock — as well as scoring and sound design.
For Shlohmo, grief and creation became intertwined. The end result is a deeply immersing album, containing only one feature from longtime friend and WeDidIt labelmate D33J.
TORY LANEZ
Toronto born rapper/singer Tory Lanez is ready to go for it all. His tastes wander far from the realm of your average hip-hop dude. Tory Lanez’s 2014 mixtape Lost Cause helped put him on the map in more ways than one. He distanced himself further from conventional R&B and rap with contributions from RL Grime and Ryan Hemsworth. Most importantly, it caught the ear wunderkind super-producer Benny Blanco, who signed Lanez to Interscope via his own Mad Love imprint. The two are currently working on Lanez’s debut album, and have released the first single titled, “Say It.”
Now that you know that Toronto's Tory Lanez has one of the most distinct sounds in rap, and that the WEDIDIT collective is stretching electronic music toward untapped edges, it comes as no surprise that the group would create a project that turn heads. When they all holed up in Los Angeles for a week late last year, the crew walked out with a batch of icy R&B over dark plum beats that defied even their own expectations. Their collaborative EP, “Cruel Intentions” features gripping new production from RL Grime, Shlohmo, Baauer and more, with Tory Lanez in top form throughout.
